This Is The Bag That Unites Royalty And It-Girls
From Chanel’s iconic 2.55 to the Hermès Birkin, some handbags transcend trends and unite fashion followers from all walks of life. Diana, Princess of Wales regularly carried Dior’s Lady Dior bag and Gucci’s bamboo-handle tote; designs which have since become popular with Gen-Z fashion plates, for example.
Aspinal’s elegant Mayfair bag, launched in 2008, also has ties to both royals and celebrities. It was the third bag designed by creative director Mariya Dykalo and has since evolved to become a trademark of the brand – the Midi is a bestseller, while the Nano is Dykalo’s tiny take on the micro bag trend.
The Duchess of Cambridge owns at least two colourways of the Mayfair – including lilac and black – while Emily Ratajkowski and Gigi Hadid are fans of the classic black and emerald croc versions, respectively. The Duchess carried the black style for a visit to Copenhagen, paired with a poppy red blazer and tailored trousers.
The latter models have shown how to bring the traditional ladylike bag styles bang up to date for now. Emily wore hers with a feathered off-the-shoulder top from Saint Laurent, skinny black jeans and knee-high boots from Schutz for an appearance on Saturday Night Live, while Gigi celebrated her sister Bella Hadid’s 25th birthday wearing a a grey tweed bustier and matching pocketed cargo trousers from St John’s spring/summer 2022 collection, with her Aspinal Mayfair in hand.
The It-girls and royalty can agree on one thing: Aspinal’s Mayfair is a sure-fire winner, come day or night.
