Wild Garden, 2025

Painted in the late afternoon light, this work captures dense green shrubbery set against a lilac sky, evoking the shifting seasonal rhythms of Dykalo’s West Sussex garden. A committed advocate for wilding practices and ecological preservation, the artist spends considerable time tending to and observing this cultivated yet untamed landscape. Working en plein air, Dykalo translates the garden’s constantly evolving forms into a vibrant, almost kinetic field of vegetation, where growth, movement, and change seem to unfold across the surface in real time. Thick foliage occupies the foreground, with elongated stems reaching upward in gestures that suggest both resilience and aspiration, presenting the garden as a quiet exaltation of nature and a meditation on renewal. Formally, the painting recalls the expressive intensity of Vincent van Gogh, particularly the works produced during his time in Saint-Rémy, in its heightened colour and energetic handling of paint. Each mark, impasto stroke, and gestural flourish conveys the varied textures and rhythms of a living garden, revealing the solace and stillness that can be found within a dimly lit evening landscape.
